Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in building interfaith tolerance at Ngaliyan 01 Public Elementary School. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study type, data collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation which are then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this study indicate that Islamic Religious Education has an important role in implementing tolerance values in schools through various activities, such as praying together before learning, dividing religious learning spaces according to students' beliefs, and interactions between students and teachers that reflect mutual respect. PAI teachers act as teachers, role models, mediators, and facilitators in building an understanding of the limits of tolerance and the importance of respecting differences. Supporting factors include the culture of a society that has long lived in a tolerant atmosphere, while obstacles arise from students' lack of understanding regarding different religious practices. These findings are in line with Rawls's theory of tolerance and UNESCO's guidelines on inclusive education. This study confirms that PAI has a significant contribution in forming a harmonious school environment and is worthy of being a reference for other schools in strengthening tolerance through religious education.
